What is Project Based Learning? Is it the same as Inquiry Learning? I am in a liminal space just now.
Edutopia has some great resources created by teachers documenting their classrooms.
Inquiry-Based Learning: From Teacher-Guided to Student-Driven Edutopia
After viewing this and another great eyeopener I understand now that inquiry learning gives the student more interaction with their peers, resources and teachers, yet lets students have choice through developing their own questions and answers. They are thinking. The general topics are introduced by the teachers.
Prof John Hattie on Inquiry Learning - Corwin 2015
Prof Hattie raises valid points. How can a student possibly take on a project of interest without having the basic background knowledge to base it on. I clearly remember my dismay when my son demanded the materials to build a go kart with an engine that would really work at the age of 5. Even if I knew what to purchase, how would he figure out how to put it together without research or an adult who knew what to do?
We must not dampen spirits but offer support in providing background knowledge and skills to enable the student to move from the liminal space and experience success.
