The short but stark details of the various bags were very thought-provoking. How can one really understand the thoughts of those who are experiencing such disruption to their lives. In our first world environment, we consider moving house or losing a job as a stressful situation.
These people have lost their nation, their home, their lifestyle, their clothes, their loved ones, income and quite often their dignity.

To consider their educational needs, is to consider something that will empower them to move from their temporary status to a new fresh life with some control. When those children approach any form of learning space, they will be adjusting their behaviour. Initially, they may need to learn a new language or accept being grouped with others of a different culture. They may just learn to survive through copying others' behaviour.

If a classroom is available, a sense of security and safety will allow these students to focus. They need time to listen and be listened to. They need time to come to terms with the new environment and when ready, to express and unload their thoughts, perhaps recording their experiences. They need to to feel like a human. Routine and calm would be a good start. In planning classroom learning, Is important to show respect for different ways or culture to those of the new country. It may be necessary to discuss in small groups to minimise self-consciousness or fear of "doing wrong". Groups may need to be of single gender due to cultural considerations.although it is important that all student receive the same opportnities to aactivities such as exercise and use of the computers.

The learning process is a means to change in the ability to meet the most needs, yet it in the process, provides some of the essential needs for coping with the change.

I found this adaptation of Maslow's theory in the article Beyond Blue to Green, but thought I would keep a copy of it here as a reference and reminder of all things students need in order to be be in an optimum position to learning. For some students, school and teachers are the only stable part of life. If we as teachers can provide a little of each of these where needed, our students may achieve a little more.
