"Stories are deep and instinctive in human nature. They transcend ages, cultures and disciplines, and play an important role in our everyday lives. Used as a powerful vehicle for communication, storytelling also appears in many different forms in learning."

In reading this post, I realised that this is a powerful tool that has been used by traditional cultures for thousands of years. Teachers, parents and extended families have used stories to entertain and teach facts, language and ideas and this is now supplemented by the numerous forms of media: television, movies, videos of picture book readings and audio-books.

I thought of the many children in the world whose lives and education are impacted by natural disaster and war.

"If all students in low-income countries left primary school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty. That’s equivalent to a 12 percent drop in world poverty, a statistic too big to ignore." https://www.usaid.gov/news-information/frontlines/new-players-and-graduation/how-get-all-children-reading

They may have limited access to media, but storytelling is a tool which may allow education to take place. I have discovered one text which offers teacher support for using storytelling. Please add your recommendations in the comments.
