From the #AussieED chat on twitter led by @WillcottJulie, it was clear that all that we read about maker spaces is true! My thanks to Julie Willcott and her contributors to the chat.

What Maker Spaces Look Like

Variety of simple materials

  • cardboard

  • paper

  • pencils

  • tubes

  • wire

  • duct tape

  • origami paper

  • Lego

  • journal

  • milk bottles

  • lids

  • rulers

  • glue and anything that may be cut and placed elsewhere

  • anything that students can pull apart to find out how it works - hopefully they may put it back together again

Students

  • noisy

  • collaborating

  • making mess

  • showing evidence of learning

  • having fun

  • don't realise they are learning

What Do Students Learn?

  • teamwork

  • problem-solving

  • persistence

  • resilience

  • about themselves

  • about what they need to learn

  • about their own potential​​

  • self regulation

  • critical thinking

  • skills and content from the curriculum

  • patience
